10 Features to Look for in an Electric Bike

When choosing an electric bike, don’t just choose the most expensive or newest model. Technological advancements have paved the way for a wide range of e-bike models.

To own the electric bike that would serve you best, you must learn about all the available features, accessories, and e-bike models. This way, not only are you aware of their existence, but you can also buy one based on your specific preferences.

1) Size of tires or wheels: Picking the right type of wheels ensures the bike can accommodate your riding style and preferred terrain. For example, 23-25 wide road tires would definitely feel different to mountain bike tires if both are used on grassy or muddy surfaces.

2) Motor: It’s confusing to check out the motor of e-bikes, especially if this would be your first buy. As a rule of thumb, pick an electric bike with motors between 250 and 350 watts since these are enough to carry you in most situations.

3) Replaceable batteries: While built-in batteries have their advantages, it is better to go with replaceable batteries and always have a backup battery ready to use.

4) Weight: The weight of an e-bike is often overlooked, but is an important specification to check. This is particularly true if the user is petite or plans to ride long trails… Imagine riding a big and bulky bike and running out of batteries in the middle of the ride.

5) Pedal-assist: The main difference between electric bikes to traditional bikes is the assistance you receive from these modern e-bikes. There are two types of pedal-assist functions: the cadence-based sensor (feels lighter and provides better assist) and the torque-based pedal-assist (feels more like a traditional bike).

6) Cargo and utility racks: Some bigger-sized electric bikes are designed with built-in racks. For other e-bikes, adding racks for carrying cargo would fall on the user’s shoulders. If you don’t want the hassle of installing racks over the rear wheel, then pick a model that already has racks installed and ready to use right off the bat.

7) Anti-theft and security: You’re going to invest money in the e-bike, so you might as well get additional anti-theft protection. From straightforward bike locks to advanced GPS trackers, you’ll have many options to choose from. Sometimes, the e-bike model would have an integrated security feature, too!

8) Lighting and LCD: Lights should be a non-negotiable, especially if you’re going to use the bike at night. For some people, the LCD dashboard is useful for navigation. Note that both these features aren’t added to all e-bikes, so you’d have to find a model specifically built with lights and LCD control.

9) Gadgets: Do you love apps and use them for all your day-to-day tasks? If so, you might want to find an e-bike that offers smartphone integration.

10) Space-saving or not: Not all e-bikes are foldable, so if you need one that is easy to store even inside your small apartment, make sure to choose a space-saving electric bike.

When buying an electric bike, the best thing you can do is to research first. Since e-bikes aren’t actually cheap, making an informed decision could reduce the risk of disappointment.
